Wellington Mormons Donate Food to Women's Refuge

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Wellington donated food and other groceries to the city's women's refuge recently.

Wellington Food Collection

For the last five years Wellington members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have held an annual grocery collection for the Wellington Women’s Refuge.

This year, during May, Latter-day Saints from Tawa, Petone, Wainuiomata and Wellington donated groceries from their own cupboards.

A representative from the women’s refuge said that previous donations from Church members have stocked their shelves for up to six months. This year the Wellington Women’s Refuge is sharing the donated items with Maori Women’s Refuge.

The groceries are used for women in violent situations who have had to leave their homes in a hurry with no resources. Food, toiletry, and baby care items provide much needed relief to these women and their children.

George Harvey, of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, expressed his thanks to Church members at the close of the collection. “Serving in the community is an important part of being a follower of Christ. Our continuing relationship with Wellington Women’s Refuge helps women get on their feet again.”

The Downtown Community Ministry Food Bank, the Wainuiomata Food Bank and the Night Shelter are past recipients of grocery donations from members of the Church in past years.
