Severe Weather Conditions Impact People of Kiribati

Students and staff from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Moroni High School in Tarawa, Kiribati who live on the neighbouring island of Betio have been encouraged to go home due to three days of severe weather conditions which are making travel conditions increasingly hazardous.

According to the Latter-day Saints’ Service Centre Manager for Kiribati, Iotua Tune, the Nippon Causeway — which links Tarawa and Betio — will soon be closed by the government due to serious damage that has been incurred by rough seas and strong winds and the increasingly difficult driving conditions.

“Hundreds of homes have been destroyed by the waves,” Mr Tune said. “Road conditions are very bad at the moment and public transport has been reduced.”

Latter-day Saint leaders continue to monitor the situation and assess needs of families and communities so support can be provided.
