Samoans Still Singing After Cyclone Gita

On Good Friday, March 30, 2018, in Pago Pago and on Easter Sunday, April 1, 2018, in Apia, several congregations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will gather to sing portions of Handel’s “Messiah” along with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square.

The concert will originate in Salt Lake City in the United States, but individuals and groups around the world are invited to participate in the event via technology, in real time or delayed broadcast.

A number of Samoan and American Samoan congregations have taken up the opportunity to sing with the Choir.

According to a spokesman for the Church in Pago Pago, Kalilimoku Hunt, "the devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Gita could have caused some to blame God for not protecting them from the ravages of the storm. But these Latter-day Saints have chosen instead to gather this Easter season to sing praises for the blessings of the Messiah, Jesus Christ."

Anyone wishing to join the sing-along is welcome. It will be presented on Friday, March 30, at 5:00 p.m. in the Latter-day Saint Church located on the main highway in Pago Pago and at 6:00 p.m. in the Latter-day Saint Church located just off the main road in Mapusaga (follow the signs).

In Apia it will be presented on Sunday, April 1, at 6:00 p.m. in the LDS Church building in the village of Motootua.
