LDS Charities' Donation Supports Local Community Hospital

On Thursday 12 April 2018, twenty-five crates of medical equipment were delivered to the Tungaru Central Hospital in Nawerewere, Tarawa, Kiribati.

The equipment was donated by LDS Charities (the humanitarian arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) who in partnership with the Ministry of Health, made the donation possible.

LDS Charities partners with organisations throughout the Pacific who understand the unique needs of the communities they serve and then assist to develop local solutions.

The Honorable, Tauanea Marea, Health Minister, Permanent Secretary, Ms. Tiene Tooki, President John F. Larkin and Sister Robyn Larkin who preside over the Marshall Islands/Kiribati Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Pinto Katia, Country Welfare Manager and Elder Daniel and Sister Rebecca Kitchen, humanitarian missionaries for the Church, took part in the handover.

The Obstetric Ward received three birthing beds, a fetal monitor, a fetal doppler, two stretcher trolleys, two examinations tables, two examination lights and five infant beds.

The Diabetic Foot Clinic received a hydraulic examination bed, emergency trolly, examination stool and a LED light.

The new Bonriki Health Clinic, which will be opening soon, will receive two dressing trolleys, an examination bed, a fetal doppler and a LED light.

Permanent Secretary Ms. Tiene Tooke accepted the donation to the hospital and clinic and expressed gratitude for the good relationship the hospital shares with LDS Charities.

President Larkin and Elder Kitchen spoke about the Humanitarian program of the Church.

Elder Kitchen explained that the money for donations such as the medical equipment comes from everyday members who donate funds specifically to help people in need. He went on to say, “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints believes in following Christ’s example of doing good to all people, no matter what race or religion.”

The handover ceremony was held in the newly renovated boardroom at the hospital.

Mormons believe that during His earthly ministry, the Saviour taught the principle of concern for "the one". We believe that he invites us all to do the same by seeking out those who are in need.
