Russell Perry and his wife Wendy, serving a full-time humanitarian mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Fiji, recently organised a successful service project to assemble hygiene kits destined for emergency containers on Viti Levu and Vanua Levu.
LDS Charities (the humanitarian arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) maintains three emergency containers in Fiji that contain assets to address emergencies that may arise.
These 20 foot shipping containers hold tools, sheltering materials, water purification and containers, safety clothing, generators, cleaning products, food prep, and medical supplies.
The containers are managed by local welfare managers and humanitarian missionaries who are responsible to disperse the needed materials during an emergency and re-stock for future use.
The project involved youth from the Samabula Latter-day Saint congregation, students from LDS Primary School in Samabula, LDS College in Tamavua, missionaries and service centre employees.
Wendy Perry described the youthful participants as a “wonderful burst of energy” as they pitched in and worked to complete the project.
1500 kits with personal hygiene items provided by LDS Charities were completed and added to the inventory of the emergency containers.
