Fiji Church College Students Examples On and Off the Field

During the past week, students from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Church College in Suva, Fiji demonstrated their athletic skills and personal discipline both on and off the field.

The Church College under 15 Rugby League team won the National Quarter Finals, making them one of the top four teams in Fiji.  They will play in the National Semi Finals this Saturday [5 April].

According to school principal, Michael Carthew, the players demonstrated discipline by using clean language and being good sports, even when provoked.

“The team leaders have set great examples for their entire team,” he said.

The school also participated last Thursday in the Fiji Zone 1 Athletics competition.  For a small school, they performed well, the male Church College athletes coming in fourth in the medal tally out of 22 schools.  In total, Church College won eight gold, 10 silver, and seven bronze medals.

The school not only did well on the field, but the participation off the field was equally impressive.  A number of teachers and students volunteered to assist with officiating and marshalling.

The students in the grandstand prepared various cheers and songs in support of all participants.  They cheered hard for 12 hours straight displaying school spirit, unity, discipline, and fun.

Mr Carthew said, “It has been one of those weeks where things went our way and students performed well in ways far more important and lasting than on a field or track.  It is a great joy to be associated with these young Latter-day Saints who, although not perfect, work very hard at being what the gospel of Jesus Christ encourages them to be.”
