Pacific Latter-day Saints: ‘What Easter Means to Me’

Easter is a holy season designated throughout all Christendom to commemorate the victory of Jesus Christ over death.

Thomas S. Monson, President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, stated, “No words in Christendom mean more to me than those spoken by the angel to the weeping Mary Magdalene and the other Mary when, on the first day of the week, they approached the tomb to care for the body of their Lord. Spoke the angel: ‘Why seek ye the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen.’” (Luke 24:5-6)

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints observe this special time of year by remembering the atonement, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ; worshipping; repenting and renewing their faith and commitment; serving others; and celebrating with family and friends. The significance of Easter is personal to each individual.

Recently, a Latter-day Saint in Fiji, Lote Vuniduvu, video-recorded other Latter-day Saints sharing their thoughts about Easter.  Comments focused on reflecting and remembering; pondering on the atonement and resurrection of Christ; spending time with family; getting back to basics; and recommitting to live more fully according to the gospel of Jesus Christ.

In this month’s Ensign magazine, Elder James J. Hamula, Pacific Area President of the Church, wrote, “Great is the debt we owe to Jesus Christ for our resurrection.  But this is not the final goal.”

“Attaining to immortality is a prerequisite to, but it is not necessarily the same as attaining eternal life.  Immortality denotes length of life—deathless life.  Eternal life denotes quality of life—the quality of life God enjoys.  Eternal life is made available to all who exercise faith in Christ, repent of their sins, receive baptism and all the subsequent saving ordinances and covenants, receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, and endure to the end (see 2 Nephi 31, 3 Nephi 11).”

“At this Easter Season, may we praise God for the universal gift of immortality, and recommit to avail ourselves of the gift of eternal life.”
