Lifting Lives in Marshall Islands

Donated exercise equipment will help in the fight against diabetes

Recently an event was held at the Canvasback Wellness Center in Majuro, Marshall Islands to celebrate the donation of new fitness equipment from LDS Charities, the humanitarian arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Canvasback Missions started the Wellness Center in Majuro in conjunction with the Ministry of Health in 2005 in response to the increasing incidents of diabetes and other non-communicable diseases. In an island nation where 75% of adults over the age of 50 have diabetes, the Wellness Center works with local organizations, government, and individuals to reach populations throughout the Marshall Islands.

LDS Charities partners with organisations such as Canvasback Mission throughout the Pacific who understand the unique needs of the communities they serve and then assist to develop local solutions.

The donation from LDS Charities included new treadmills with headphones, stair stepper, state of the art weight racks, and balance balls used to strengthen balance and core muscles.

Elder Craig Preston and his wife, Nancy, who are serving a full-time humanitarian mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, represented LDS Charities at the handover celebration.

The gym is free to all and is widely used by hospital patients for physical therapy, hospital staff, Majuro police officers, and others who want to maintain fitness.
