Bringing School Furniture to Fiji Students

Brigham Young University, Hawaii, (BYUH) students have been working for some time on the Millstone Initiative Project with partners in Fiji.

Those involved repair school rooms and housing for teachers at the Namuka I Cake School on Vanua Levu.

New Zealand's Furniture for Schools Charitable Trust, LDS Charities, the humanitarian arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and BYUH worked together to secure donated furniture from New Zealand schools.

On arrival in Fiji, the shipping container loaded with well-loved furniture and other supplies was stored at LDS College (LDSC) in Suva until the trip to the waiting school in Vanua Levu could be arranged.

LDSC students unloaded the furniture from the container and loaded it into a truck that would ferry to Vanua Levu.

Full-time humanitarian missionaries, Russell and Wendy Perry met up with the shipment as it arrived in Vanua Levu. After traveling for many hours by land, the group arrived at the school and was met and warmly greeted by students, teachers and parents.

The students gladly pitched in to unload and carry the furniture to the classrooms.

The official handover will be in September and will include members of the BYUH group who have supported this project.

Mormons believe that the lives of those we serve as well as our own are lifted as we reach out in love to those in need.
