Church Provides Water Tank and Generator in Tonga

Humanitarian volunteers from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently provided a new water tank and generator to serve the villages of Kolofoou and Falehau on the Tongan island of Niuatoputapu.

While visiting Niuatoputapu earlier this year, President Leitoni M. Tupou of the Church’s Tonga Nuku’alofa Mission, learned that the water system there was inadequate.

After consultation with Church and village leaders, the Church brought to the island two new tanks, strategically placed near the villages.

Residents of the villages paid 10% of the total cost of the equipment. The remaining costs were met by Latter-day Saint and other donors from around the world. Church and community volunteers provided all the labour to complete the project.

Families in the villages provided food and lodging for those helping with the installation of the tanks and engine.

The two villages now have an active water committee that meets twice a month to review water usage and discuss any concerns with the water operation.  Committee members are receiving training from Church volunteers with respect to upkeep and repair of the tank and generator.

Volunteers from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints work with others around the world in identifying community needs and solutions to bless individuals and families.
