Church Leaders Congratulate New President of Kiribati

His Excellency Taneti Maamau became the new president of the Pacific nation of Kiribati this month.

At his recent swearing in, Latter-day Saint Service Centre manager, Iotua Tune, congratulated His Excellency on his appointment.

Of the newly elected 33 Members of Parliament, three are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They are Kaure Babo, MP, from Maiana Island; Tebao Awerika, MP, from Betio; and Mikarite Temari, MP, from Christmas Island.

MP Tebao Awerika was elected as the Minister of Environment and Agriculture; and MP Mikarite Temari as the Minister of Lines and Phoenix Islands Development.

Latter-day Saints are encouraged to be good citizens in the countries in which they live. Founding president of the Church, Joseph Smith, wrote in 1842: “We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.”
