Church Honours Peter Thomas and Lucy Knight at Auckland Symphony Orchestra Christmas Concert

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints honoured Auckland Symphony Orchestra music director Peter Thomas and his wife Lucy Knight last night at the Orchestra's annual "Christmas Celebration" concert.

Elder Kevin W. Pearson, Pacific Area President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, paid tribute to Peter Thomas and Lucy Knight and their family before the concert.

He thanked them for their courage and service to the community notwithstanding personal challenges faced by the family in 2014.

Lucy Knight was attacked by a young man earlier this year when she went to the defence of a woman having her bag stolen in a supermarket car park. Ms Knight sustained serious head injuries from the September attack and has been recovering since then.

Last night was her husband Peter's first public performance with the Auckland Symphony Orchestra since the incident, and Lucy's first time watching her husband conduct since she was injured.

Elder Pearson described Lucy as a hero for her quick and courageous response to come to the aid of a stranger.

He said Christmas is about remembering the birth and many gifts of Jesus Christ, and that Lucy and Peter exemplify Christian love and service to others.

Members of the Auckland Symphony Orchestra were joined on stage by a 120 voice choir from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, led by Ivoga Green.

Traditional Christmas carols and hymns, as well as original compositions and arrangements were performed to the delight of the Auckland Town Hall crowd.

Latter-day Saint leaders and other guests included Elder Kevin W. Pearson, Sister June Pearson, Elizabeth Pearson, Elder S. Gifford Nielsen, Sister Wendy Nielsen and Sister Peggy Haleck.
