Church Continues Support of Primary Schools in Tonga

LDS Charities, an organization of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, recently concluded upgrading more school classrooms, this time in Tonga.

Working with local volunteers, rooms were remodelled or repaired.

“They turned out beautifully and were very much appreciated,” said Kent Murdock a retired American who along with his wife Linda are serving in Tonga as humanitarian missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

At 'Atele si'i GPS volunteers tiled four large classrooms, plus the veranda, and painted the front of the school.

The work was completed in five days, just in time for Class 6 to sit in an upgraded classroom for their government mandated exam.

At the Folaha GPS School the addition of a door, windows, a tiled floor and a new roof created a library from an abandoned room in disrepair.

“This was a very rewarding project and the whole village including the children were very happy with the outcome,” Murdock said.

Members of the Parent Teachers Association of the Kolomotu’a School helped repair and update five classrooms.

When the work was done, each upgraded classroom was outfitted with high quality, gently-used furniture delivered by the Church.

The furniture was provided by Furniture for Schools Charitable Trust which receives donations from schools in and around Auckland. School supplies were also donated.

As in Tonga, the Church completed over 30 similar projects in 2015 throughout the Pacific, including in Fiji, Samoa and Kiribati.

Working with others to improve lives is important to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
