Auckland Volunteers #LightTheWorld for Kids in Developing Nations

Volunteers from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child and other groups boxed gifts in downtown Auckland on Saturday 1 December for children in developing nations.

Around 400 hygiene kits were assembled by the volunteers to kick off this Christmas season's #LightTheWorld initiative.

The personal hygiene items assembled today included combs, toothbrushes, face cloths, jandals (flip flops) and hair ties.

These items were purchased using funds donated by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

They will be packed with other gifts such as note pads, pens and toys by Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child staff, and shipped overseas to be delivered to children in developing nations.

#LightTheWorld is a global Christmas initiative launched by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints encouraging people around the world to serve others during the holiday season. The “Light the World” campaign, now in its third year, runs through the end of December 2018. This year’s theme, “Give as He Gave,” invites people to follow the example of the Saviour Jesus Christ, “the light of the world” (John 8:12).

President Russell M. Nelson has invited members to minister to each other in a “new, holier way” by turning our focus from “how can I serve?” to “whom can I serve?”

Today's service activity at the Church's Scotia Place meetinghouse (off Queen Street in Auckland City) was one of many similar activities across the world.

The worldwide day of service gives people an opportunity to find simple ways to serve, such as helping refugees or donating to charities.

During December, four videos in 29 languages will promote weekly themes. Videos, posters, missionary pass-along cards, a calendar featuring service ideas and a family home evening lesson can be found at
