Latter-day Saints across South Pacific prepare for day of community service

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Porirua, New Zealand have an ambitious goal: completely fill the store cupboards of the area’s two largest foodbanks in a single day.

That day is Saturday, 27 October, a day set aside as a Pacific-wide “Day of Service” by the Church.

Church members, missionaries and friends in the community will prepare for the event by delivering fliers and balloons throughout the area to raise awareness the week before. On the day of the event, seven trucks accompanied by runners will collect food donations.

The food from the drive will be presented to the Salvation Army and Wesley foodbanks in a ceremony on Monday, 29 October. In the meantime, missionaries are getting an early start by volunteering at the Salvation Army foodbank every Tuesday.

Porirua’s large-scale food drive is just one of many service-centered activities being planned throughout Australia, New Zealand and the islands of the South Pacific for the Day of Service.

Church members and members of the community alike are invited to find out how they can participate in their local areas by contacting local church leaders.
