Latter-day Saints in Tonga Learn About Their Ancestors

Members and friends of the Nuku’alofa Harbour Stake (a group of congregations) of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints took part in a family history night on 24 March 2017 to learn more about their ancestors.

Prior to the meeting, individuals who are learning about the Church were given “My Family” booklets to complete for use during the event.

The “My Family: Stories That Bring Us Together” booklet provides an easy way to capture and preserve your family story. It helps record family information, including adding photos, names, dates, and precious family stories.

Volunteers from the stake’s family history program were on hand to assist any who needed help starting or continuing their family history research. A FamilySearch.org account was created for any who did not already have one.

Family Search.org is a family history website operated by the Church. There is no charge to use it and it includes the largest family history database in the world.

One of the highlights of the event was when participants were asked for their names to enter into the FamilySearch.org website. Soon the website had provided them with the names of their parents and grandparents.

Malia Helu expressed her joy at knowing who her grandparents were. “I never knew who my grandparents were. I have a strong feeling that I must complete the ‘My Family’ booklet.”

The Church operates a family history centre in Fasi that is open to the public. Assistance is available during all hours that the centre is open. The centre is located at the Harbour Stake Centre in Halaleva.
