Students Prepare for Samoan Independence Day Celebrations

LDS Church College Pesega invited to perform for Head of State and Prime Minister

Students from LDS Church College Pesega are enthusiastically preparing to dance at Samoa’s Independence Day celebration in two weeks.

The faculty and students feel honoured and want their performance to be perfect.

“We are performing for the head of state, that’s crazy,” said student leader Rodney Fomia’s. “We want to give it everything.”

LDS Church College Pesega, part of the world-wide educational system of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is one of just three colleges in the country invited by the Prime Minister.

The other two colleges invited are public schools.

The student leaders say they still need a lot of practice before they will be ready, but judging by the enthusiasm of the more than 800 student performers, they are confident they will be ready to “Wow” the crowd.

This is a valuable new experience in several ways, according to Principal Tuugatiti Leauanae.

“We are sharing with our students a cultural dance, and many other things.  We have sports, but it’s really hard to put together over 800 students,” he said.

“We’re grateful. It’s an opportunity to share the gospel, and we have never been invited by the government before.  Now is our time and we want to do it perfectly.”

The students will perform for 20-minutes on Wednesday 1 June.
