Regal, Government and Church Leaders Celebrate 35th Anniversary of Liahona Stake

His Royal Highness, Prince Ata, and the Honourable Samuela ‘Akilisi Pohiva, Prime Minister of Tonga, joined other dignitaries and members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Saturday, 22 August, to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Church’s Nuku’alofa Tonga Liahona Stake.

A stake is a group of Latter-day Saint congregations in a geographical location. The Liahona stake was the sixth stake to be organised in Tonga. There are now 19 Latter-day Saint stakes and 166 congregations in the Kingdom of Tonga.

In his remarks, Prime Minister ‘Akilisi Pohiva shared with the youth present the story of his upbringing. He encouraged them to work hard and set goals in life. He spoke passionately about his ancestors and genealogy.

Also present at the event were Lord Vaea of Houma; the Honourable Semisi Sika, Speaker of the Whole House Committee; the Honourable Poasi Tei, Minister for Public Enterprises; and former Area Seventy for the Church, Sione Fineanganofo.

Lord Vaea thanked the Church for contributing to the building of the nation.

One of the highlights of the celebration was a series of cultural dances performed by Latter-day Saint youth.

Anniversary events also included a colourful parade, anniversary ball, a commemoration luncheon and devotional meetings.
