Mormon Youth Use Social Media to Share their Values

The beliefs of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are often misunderstood by others. With this in mind, more than 100 youth from Auckland’s North Shore took to social media this weekend to share their beliefs.

The youth participated in a workshop where they learned how to make short videos about their religious beliefs and how they live the gospel. They then broke into small groups to make a video using their mobile devices.

The topics selected by the youth covered a variety of Latter-day Saint values and beliefs including their testimony of the Saviour, the importance of family and the need for a living prophet.

The theme of the workshop was to “To Sweep the Earth as with a Flood,” based on a talk given by Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. His message teaches the importance of using technology to share positive and uplifting messages with people all over the world.

Elder Bednar taught that “Social media channels are global tools that can personally and positively impact large numbers of individuals and families. I believe the time has come for us as disciples of Christ to use these inspired tools appropriately and more effectively to testify of God the Eternal Father…and His Son, Jesus Christ…”.

After making their videos, the youth were then invited to share them online through a variety of social media channels including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

One young participant said “It’s important to share the gospel through social media because it gives others the opportunity to hear the gospel and come unto Christ.”

Here are some of the vidoes that were created by the youth:
