Mormon Apostle Visits Wellington

Wellington Mormons gathered at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Hataitai Chapel last night [23 April 2013] to hear from Elder Dallin H. Oaks, a member of the Church’s Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

Elder Oaks is on a South Pacific tour, encompassing Samoa, Brisbane, Auckland, Hamilton, and Wellington. He usually resides in Salt Lake City, USA.

He encouraged members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to be Christ-like in their homes and in their attitudes to others. He urged those in attendance to reach out to their neighbours in kindness and service, and to find common ground with those of other faiths.

The apostle also counseled members of the Church to avoid debt, even when cultural traditions may suggest to do otherwise.

Wellington Latter-day Saint leader, Peter Thomson, said, “We had a fantastic turnout. It’s not every day that an apostle comes to Wellington. His heartfelt messages will have a positive impact on our people.”

Lance Harvey, a Church leader from Upper Hutt enjoyed the meeting, saying, “The issues Elder Oaks addressed were relevant to people’s lives here in New Zealand. He is an inspiring speaker with a great sense of humour.”

Apostles are special witnesses of Christ, throughout the world.  Earlier this month at the Church’s annual General Conference in Salt Lake City, USA, Elder Oaks spoke on what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ.

“Following Christ is not a casual or occasional practice,” Elder Oaks said, “but a continuous commitment and way of life that applies at all times and in all places.”

Elder Oaks is travelling with his wife, Sister Kristen Oaks. Last night Elder and Sister Oaks were accompanied by Elder F. Michael Watson, a member of the Church's Pacific Area Presidency, and his wife Sister Jolene Watson.

Church members from as far afield as Horowhenua and Wairarapa were present at the meeting last night.
