LDS Charities Donates Sports Equipment to Catholic School in Marshall Islands

Representatives of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints donated sporting equipment to the Marshall Islands' Assumption Catholic School this week.

According to local Latter-day Saint leader, Cheta Anien, the aim of the donation is to improve health of young people by promoting physical activity.

Diabetes is a major problem in the Marshall Islands and LDS Charities, a humanitarian arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is working with other churches and government to reduce incidence of the disease.

“We are so pleased to have this opportunity to support the students and staff of Assumption Catholic School with this donation,” Mr Anien said.

“Through this donation of a variety of different sports balls and goals, we expect these school children will have more opportunities to participate in physical activity, sports and sports leagues like soccer, volleyball and basketball and to develop a lifelong passion to stay fit and active. We hope these children will not suffer diabetes or its complications like blindness, kidney or heart disease, strokes or amputations.”

He added, “We wish to congratulate Assumption School officials for the actions they have already taken to help prevent diabetes. They have cut sugary foods from their school cafeteria, planted a learning garden and launched a soccer league with another school.”
