Elder and Sister Haleck Meet with Government Leaders, Church Members and Missionaries in Kiribati

Elder O. Vincent Haleck, president of the Pacific Area of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, accompanied by his wife, Sister Peggy Haleck, visited with Church leaders, members and missionaries last week in Kiribati.

Elder and Sister Haleck also met with the His Excellency Taneti Maamau, president of the Republic of Kiribati as well as other government, faith and community leaders.

At a special New Year's Eve dinner hosted by His Excellency and attended by members of the Kiribati Cabinet, community leaders and foreign diplomats, Elder Haleck presented the nation’s leader with a Christus statuette as a token of friendship and gratitude.

Around 100 Latter-day Saint missionaries also attended the dinner.

“We are very grateful for President Maamau’s leadership in Kiribati,” Elder Haleck said. “We are part of the nation and want to continue to do all we can to support the people and the government by lifting individuals, strengthening marriages and families, and assisting communities to become more self-reliant and successful.”

“The central part in our service in Kiribati, and elsewhere,” Elder Haleck said, “is our faith in our Heavenly Father, our Saviour Jesus Christ, and in His Atonement.”

“We are honoured to work with His Excellency and others in Kiribati to help as many people as possible through humanitarian, self-reliance, education and faith-based initiatives.”

Elder Haleck added, “As we talk with each other, understand each other, and work together, we can help more of God’s children in more meaningful and lasting ways.”

One of Elder and Sister Haleck's other stops during their time in Kiribati was a visit with the Latter-day Saints living in Tearinibai, North Tarawa.
