1,000 Auckland Mormon Youth Gather for Five Day Conference

Over 1,000 Latter-day Saint youth gathered at Kings College 5 January through 10 January for an event entitled “For the Strength of Youth” (FSY).

The young people, ages 14 to 17, were divided into groups led by 160 young adult counsellors.  The teens spent five days participating in activities, devotionals, workshops and service projects all focusing on the theme “Come Unto Christ.”

Elder O. Vincent Haleck, First Counsellor in the Pacific Area Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, spoke with the youth about ways they can strengthen their faith in Jesus Christ, including personal prayer and scripture study, education and service to others.

Pacific Area Seventy, Elder Paul R. Coward, also addressed the young people. He encouraged the youth to be grateful for God’s plan for all of His children.

Conference coordinators, Glenn and Tracey Burgess, posted on Facebook: “The purpose of FSY is to strengthen the young adults in committing to live the teachings of Jesus Christ by providing inspiring, edifying learning opportunities and wholesome social experiences.”

A fun sports day, musical fireside and a variety show were also part of the five day festivities. The youth were also encouraged to use social media to share their experiences as young New Zealanders and as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

On the final evening, the young adults were given the opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings about the event as well as their commitment to base their lives on the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Participant Talia Stanley posted on Facebook: “FSY 2015 was one of the most uplifting experiences I have had.  I am grateful for those who organized it, for our counsellors and for Kings College facilities.  The entire event was unforgettable and absolutely life changing.”
